Ms. Mariyam Shiuna
President, Anti Corruption Commission
Ms. Mariyam Shiuna is the President of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of the Maldives.
Prior to her appointment to ACC she was the Executive Director at Transparency International – Maldives. During her tenure at TI-Maldives she led three of the largest domestic nationwide election observation efforts; designed and delivered capacity buildings programs on anti-corruption and good governance for local councilors, electoral candidates, ministers, political parties and other national stakeholders; and led advocacy for anti-corruption legislation such as on right to information, whistleblower protection and freedom of association.
Ms. Shiuna has extensive experience in researching and advocating for transparency, accountability and good governance. As such she has published op-eds and research on these issues, and is a speaker at national and international platforms on anti-corruption and good governance. She has also undertaken consultancy work on anti-corruption with international institutions such as the World Bank. She was also a member of the 24-member Transparency Advisory Group, a regional body of academics, professionals and activists promoting RTI, transparency and good governance in South Asia.
Ms. Shiuna’s professional career also includes working at Birkbeck College; University of East London; and Institute of Administrative Management in the UK; at UNDP and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maldives.
Ms. Shiuna completed her MSc. in Violence, Conflict and Development from the School of African and Oriental Studies, University of London; BA (Hons) in History from London Metropolitan University; and Postgraduate Certificate in Politics from Birkbeck College, University of London; Certificate in Management from the Chartered Management Institute, UK.
