Accounting profession is critical to the development and wellbeing of national economies and the global economy. As trade across borders continues its exponential growth, the need for reliable and high-quality financial reporting as well as assurance provided by the auditors on them cannot be overstated; they are the keys to improving financial transparency, management accountability, good governance as well as the main source of investor confidence and contribute immensely to the process of achieving financial prudence.

While financial reporting in the Maldives as it exists today may have developed recently, auditing – public sector auditing, in particular – began in Maldives about 67 years ago, with just one man and one desk. Since then, the Auditor General's Office and its predecessor organisations have taken several initiatives to develop accounting profession in the Republic of Maldives. Auditor General’s legal mandate to grant audit licenses and set auditing standards in the Maldives meant the AGO had to play a pivotal role in developing the profession – in the absence of a professional accountancy organization in the country – with in collaboration with the Maldivian accounting fraternity. Continued efforts by a dedicated group of key stakeholders led by the Auditor General resulted in the establishment of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Maldives (CA Maldives), the first ever professional accountancy organisation in the Maldives; it represents the most important milestone in the history of the accounting profession in the Maldives. As CA Maldives holds the Maldives Accountants Forum for the first time since its formation, a great deal of work lies ahead for CA Maldives to make an impact in the Accounting Profession in Maldives. CA Maldives consults stakeholders in the profession to identify issues and priorities and determine a way forward, placing the needs and expectations of the business community at the heart of stakeholder consultation.

With the enactment of Maldives Chartered Accountants Act 13/2020 on 8th September 2020, CA Maldives took on the mantle of the regulator of the accountancy profession and has since continued its efforts to advance the interests of accounting community in the country under the leadership of the Auditor General who will remain the President of Institute of Chartered Accountants during the transitional period of four years.

As the host of MAF 2021, CA Maldives thanks the Auditor General's Office for its efforts to bring together key stakeholders through the Maldives Accountants which it started back in 2017 and for leading the discussion and initiating the efforts towards drafting the Maldives Chartered Accountants Bill. CA Maldives also wishes to place on record the input from accountants and auditors in the profession along with stakeholders and vested interests.

The journey has just begun for CA Maldives and much more challenging work lies ahead for CA Maldives leadership and hosting the MAF 2021 could herald the beginning of a new era in shaping the profession in the country. The forum is meant to bring together the accounting professionals working in the country and hear from the regulators and business community, in order to enable the accountants and auditor to better attune their work to the needs the of industry stakeholders and to provide a capacity development opportunity for the professionals while creating greater understanding and stronger bond among all concerned.
